The Nefarious NapStealer

Jason Jones was riding down the street when he bumped into a man.

“Excuse me,” he said to the man. “But have you seen anything strange around here? I mean, I’m Jason Jones, the main newspaper reporter around here. I’m also kind of a detective because of it but I’m trying to find out the answer to why no one is taking naps anymore, like they want to but they just can’t.”

“If that is the case, then you came to the right person,” said the man. “My name is Alex Windlewood but everyone calls me the news, because I always know what is happening around here.”

“Great!” said Jason. “Fill me in with all you know.”

As Alex started talking, Jason started writing and this is what he said.

“His name is the Nefarious NapStealer. He is who created what people call fairy tales, but some are true. He started out as a great kid and every day his grandfather took him to the park and then they went fishing, but when he was 19 his grandfather moved away. From then on he turned evil. He said life was not worth living without his Grandpa. He said he would be the Nefarious NapStealer and he would take everyone’s nap and take them for himself so he could sleep all the time and didn’t have to live his horrible life. That day he turned into the Nefarious NapStealer… Wa Ha Ha!!!”

“Sorry, I just couldn’t help doing that,” said Alex. “Anyway, the first nap he stole was the giant’s. He created Jack and the Beanstalk. The giant was always sleeping, so he was the old man that gave Jack the beans so he would wake up the giant.”

“The second nap he stole was Humpty Dumpty‘s. The real poem went like this, ‘Humpty Dumpty slept on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great shove…’ but that doesn’t rhyme, so they changed it.”

“The third nap he stole was the princess and the pea. He put the pea under the princess’ mattress and took her nap.”

“After that, he was even more nefarious than ever. Those were his first three naps, but after that, he took a ton more. He is still stealing them. There is one thing that I don’t get, he married the lady who pricked Sleeping Beauty‘s finger and put her to sleep!”

This is a very good topic and I think that it could be argued that types of violence get gendered. For example, rape could be considered a male crime. My question would be:
    1. In the fairy tales Bluebeard, Cinderella, and Rapunzel, how does violence get gendered? Are there any crimes that seem gender specific? Has the gendering of these crimes changed over time?

I think that every child should not be left out on fairy tales. The “once a upon a times” and “happily every afters” are always appreciated by children. For me, personally, some of these fairy tales got me through some tough times during my childhood and it gave me hope that the good will always triumph. good that there are still books that tells the original stories of the fairy tales. I became only aware now that there have been new stories and versions to tell. I only wish that the generation of children today will not be too cool and too busy with new modern gadgets and technology to not read fairy tales anymore 🙂

  11. Reading what you write is more akin to reading a book meant for a child on poems and rhymes but that book makes some sense but your remarks make no sense whatsoever.

As a child we learned Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall,

  14. While the resilience of Humpty Dumpty might provide some with reason to persevere, the spolied rotten children of Willy Wonka are most representative of the failed leadership that has caused so much pain.

With each egregious Greenspan rate cut, the glutonous consumption, instant gratification, morally bankrupt , reprehensible leaders of America feasted on fraud, corruption and no accountability.

It was as if all Americans drank from the chocolate river, bought geese upon geese in hopes of landing a golden egg, installed countless flat screen TVs and gourged themselves on cheap cash.

  19. I believe that fairy tales are a big of American culture and were a big in my life growing up. I remember reading countless fairy tales such as “The Little Red Riding Hood” and watching fairy tale movies like “The Little Red Mermaid.” Earlier in my life, fairy tales played a big role in introducing myself to life beyond reality and creativity at a young age. Fairy tales were not only intoduced to me by my parents, books, and TV/movies, but they were also incorporated throughout elementary school. Today, I read many fairy tales although I still enjoy reading them when given the chance.

I think it is great that you are exploring the more subtle messages that fairy tales are teaching. You might want to focus not only on who is executing the violence, but also on who are the victims and antagonists. That way you can show just what actions fairy tales deem of extreme violence. This can be shown with a question like:
8.) What characteristics and gender are commonly used in the antagonists?

  26. I like your topic a lot! I completely agree with you that fairy tales can have just as much an impact on adults as with children (if not more). I would like to see your answer to question Just how different is violence in women viewed differently than when men do it? Is this more positive or completely taboo when women do it?

    17) Violence in fairy tales was used to teach a lesson. Do you think this violence actually teaches a lesson? Or do you think it is overlooked? Or, do you think that fairy tales are promoting violence at all? How do you think the violence in fairy tales is perceived among readers?

  27. Modern day fairy tales are often told as stories of hope to children. This is a common factor in most childhood memories, and it is a way for those of vastly different backgrounds to connect. Everyone has irrational hopes. Everyone wants to live a dream life where they find their very own prince or princess. Such ideas are passed from generation to generation via movies, books, oral stories, dolls, toys, etc. Indeed, fairy tales have thoroughly saturated American society of our day.

I like that you brought up stereotypes that were present both at the time of the documenting of the fairy tales and also in a modern setting. Would it be possible for you to explore the relevance of these stereotypes in modern culture due to their integral aspect in child-rearing and the instilling of morals? Is not the mental categorization potentially as harmful as the explicit and implicit violence in the texts?

  30. Oh heck yeah! There have been so many already, ready to see something new! I mean, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, even the Tooth Fairy, so Humpty Dumpty would be awesome. And I totally agree that if they went back to the original fairy tales, they could have all kinds of horror movies to make.

I think a lot of potential in exploring the topic of how violence functions within fairy tales. However, before coming to the end of your post I was not sure what your topic was or where your ideas were going, so just a caution to look out for when writing your actual paper. I think you is violence every as a good thing if committed by women is a very good point to include and explore in your paper!
How does the inclusion of violence within the fairy tale affect the overall tone of the story? If there is a moral/lesson with the story how does it alter it? Does the violence serve to reinforce the lessor or hinder it?

I would like to weigh in on this question of “Fairy Tale Endings.” I’m not sure that even the fairy tales believe in fairy tale endings because if you notice all the fairy tales end on the day the prince and princess—or whoever—finally have come through trials and tribulations and are reunited “happily ever after!” But how long does that last? Who follows these two beyond that happy first day at the end of the fairy tale? Think about it, fairy tales aren’t real, are they?

    Hi Cris
I agree with you on the fairy tales. But the thing is, if as a child, we were all told the truth, and did not believe in fairy tales, I think we would be the worse off for it. They are food for the childs imagination and who wants the realities of the real life interferring with that! And the bottom line is, in the real world there is no happy ever after, everything takes time and and even then it does no work out some times any way. But fairy tales give hope, and adults can loose this hope, when experience gets the better of them. Any way, I am babbling now, and I should be studying as I have an exam on Constitutional law on Friday.

If they are convinced of that, they have a blessing.

By reading your essay, I am a little unsure of what your thesis is. I know that you are examining the influence of fairy tales on the opera, but remember that our papers need to be an argument and not a comparative analysis so you may want to refine your topic choice. Other than this, I really like you topic choice as it is very unique and will make for an interesting read. One interesting question to ask I think would be:
    1. Are there similarities between music choice and arrangement in operas based on fairy tales? How do they differ from operas that are not based on fairy tales?
